ValOrizon - Lot-et-Garonne's household waste recovery and processing corporation - is stepping up its commitment to the circular economy. It was the driving force that spurred approximately 20 organisations to set up a circular economy and recyclable material recovery cluster in 2015. These entities are developing tools and solutions to transform their respective waste products into useful resources for other partners. ValOrizon has also been awarded "zero waste, zero wastage" certification.

The next goal is to set up a circular economy ecopark in Damazan, in premises previously occupied by the Xilofrance plywood factory, which closed in 2012. The new facility will process household, farm and construction waste… Only non-hazardous, recoverable waste will be accepted. The site will include a unit that recovers and sorts clean, dry lightweight household packaging, as well as accommodation for the cluster's member businesses and ValOrizon's head office. Educational tours for schoolchildren are also planned.

The project, which is supported by the chamber of commerce and industry, the national circular economy institute and the regional and departmental councils, must now be refined. Industry partners will organise a range of workshops to achieve this goal.

For the host community, this project represents an opportunity in terms of economic development and green growth, by relocating businesses and creating non-offshorable jobs. The ecopark is also helping to fulfil the environmental quality ambitions of the Lot-et-Garonne department, which has been awarded "positive-energy and green growth" certification.
