ADEME report: Zero-waste living made easy
Follow-up and assessment of 12 dedicated, frugal and happy households
Considering that each of us produces 450 kg of waste per year, including 277 kg of household waste, a waste avoidance and reduction effort appears essential. We have an opportunity to rethink not only production and retail methods but also household consumption practices, rejecting the superfluous, switching from disposable to reusable products and encouraging DIY, reuse and repairs. Such practices are in some cases very simple and familiar, but people often believe that making changes would be inconvenient and lead to a loss of comfort or quality of life.
This study followed 12 households that have made significant progress towards "zero-waste" living (producing up to 13 less household waste than the average) and were selected for their high "happiness rating" as measured by the French quarterly happiness index. The aim of the study is to demonstrate that a gradual shift towards less wasteful practices is compatible with a high level of happiness.
